Private tutor in Hazel Green, AL

Experience
Since 2008, I have worked as a private tutor, helping all ages with reading and math skills. From August to May, my clients are limited to middle school level and up. I have prepared individuals for the math portions of the ACT and SAT, Accuplacer, and other tests. Prior to tutoring, I taught history at the University of West Georgia and for Floyd College(now Georgia Highlands). I also taught fifth and sixth grades at a private Christian school. Helping others succeed gives me immense satisfaction. Most of the students who come to me "hate math," or "hate reading." After just a few sessions, I see a dramatic increase in confidence. I continue to hear from pupils, with whom I worked years ago, who are now in high school or college participating in Beta club, taking advance courses, or making honor roll. My goal is to understand each person's thought process so I know how best to teach. I like to challenge my students to think; I will let him wrestle with a math problem before stepping in because I know that it is through our own problem solving that we master concepts. However, I know when and how to prompt, and most importantly to teach. While some need my service for more than a year, many have been ready to graduate after nine or eighteen sessions. I am very comfortable assisting students with learning disabilities. Those who come to me have included learners with ADHD, Aspergers, auditory processing disorder, nonverbal learning disorder, and opposition defiance disorder. I provide an environment where it is safe to ask any question, and I have much patience. It doesn't matter how many times I have to review a concept because I know with each repetition, my students grasp more. I meet students in my home which is located near Fairfield Plantation, between Carrollton and Villa Rica. I always start with a free consultation so I can assess each person's needs, and we can see how well we relate to each other. After meeting the potential student, the parent or student can make a hiring decision.

Hobbies
I enjoy getting outdoors to walk or work in the yard. I appreciate all wildlife and usually leave the amazing spiderwebs on the side of the house and porch. In fact, my husband and I are native wildlife enthusiasts; we're entertained as we watch the spiders wait for prey, and enjoy searching for caterpillars and butterflies among the plants. We like to feed the birds during winter and provide housing for bluebirds. My favorite "wild" creature is my calico cat. One of her favorite napping spots is in the room where I tutor. She quickly endears herself to visitors; her presence adds calm and often relieves any anxiety a child may have. We don't have biological children, but we have several "surrogate" children. Eighteen months ago, we began sponsoring a girl in Honduras through Compassion International. I love to get her letters and drawings and share details of my life with her. Reading is also a favorite past time. I enjoy children's literature, nonfiction, especially memoirs, and novels. For several years, my friends and I discussed a variety of genres in our book club "The Cereal Box Readers." We disbanded as demands on our time increased. I would love to belong to another reading group.
